Report on Hospital Field Visit to ESI Hospital, Kamarhati Venue: ESI Hospital, Kamarhati, Kolkata Organized By: Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology                (DSIPST) Participants: D.Pharm 1st Year Students Activity: Pharmacy Field Visit Introduction As a part of the practical curriculum and experiential learning under the Diploma in Pharmacy programme, Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (DSIPST) organized a Hospital Field Visit to ESI Hospital, Kamarhati on 30th July 2026 for the students of D.Pharm. The primary objective of this educational visit was to provide students with firsthand exposure to the functioning of a hospital and to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional pharmacy practice. Such field visits are an integral component of pharmacy education, enabling students to understand the role of pharmacists in patient care and hospital management Objectives of the Visit

• To familiarize students with the functioning of a hospital pharmacy.
• To understand the workflow of Out-Patient and In-Patient pharmaceutical services.
• To observe the organization and management of hospital pharmacy departments.
• To gain knowledge about diagnostic laboratory services, especially the Pathology Department.
• To enhance students’ understanding of interdisciplinary healthcare services and the role of pharmacists in patient management.

Departments Visited

1. Out-Patient Department (OPD)

The students visited the Out-Patient Department (OPD), where they observed the patient registration process, consultation procedures, and the coordination between physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals. They gained an understanding of the patient flow within the hospital and the importance of timely pharmaceutical services in outpatient care.

2. Outdoor Pharmacy (OPD Pharmacy)

The students observed the functioning of the Outdoor Pharmacy, where medicines are dispensed to OPD patients based on valid prescriptions. They learned about:

• Prescription screening and verification.
• Dispensing procedures.
• Patient counselling and medication instructions.
• Maintenance of drug records and stock management.
• Rational dispensing practices followed in a government hospital setting.

3. Indoor Pharmacy (In-Patient Pharmacy)

The visit to the Indoor Pharmacy enabled students to understand how medicines are supplied to admitted patients. They observed:

• Distribution of medicines to various wards.
• Storage of emergency medicines and intravenous (IV) fluids.
• Inventory control and proper storage conditions.
• Maintenance of ward-wise medicine supply and documentation.
• The crucial role of hospital pharmacists in ensuring safe and effective medication therapy.

4. Pathology Department

Students visited the Pathology Department to understand the role of laboratory investigations in disease diagnosis and patient management. They were introduced to:

• Collection and handling of blood and other biological samples.
• Routine hematological and biochemical investigations.
• Laboratory safety measures.
• Importance of accurate diagnostic reports in guiding therapeutic decisions.

Conclusion The Hospital Field Visit to ESI Hospital, Kamarhati was highly informative and beneficial for the D.Pharm students of DSIPST.
